Reading Concentration

Similar to SSR (Silent Sustained Reading), I do Reading Concentration with my students. I have reading periods in class where students spend 25 minutes with eyes on paper reading for enjoyment. I say eyes on paper because students need to spend time reading independently to practice all of those skills we teach during our reading comprehension lessons. I tell both my students and their parents often, "I can teach you/your child what they are supposed to do until when they are reading until I am in blue in the face, but they must practice these skills consistently and independently in order to truly master the art of reading. During reading concentration students read a chosen book until the timer goes off. They then write reflectively about what they have read. They highlight the major events and characters, ask questions and write a personal reflection. These are the forms the students use to monitor their reading and reflective writing.
