A Cool Reading Freebie

Hi everyone!  It is Teresa from Fun in K/1.  I wanted to share a fun Winter reading comprehension freebie with you.  It is perfect for 1st or 2nd graders.  Students will read a 4-page story with illustrations about building a snowman.  You can copy the story front-to-back or in booklet form (4 to a page).  Then there is a reading comprehension quiz that includes multiple choice and short answer questions.  My favorite part is the magnifying glass where students must show where they found their proof.

Click here to come over to Fun in K1 and download this freebie.

We did a compare and contrast with Song and Dance Man on a T chart!

How to Write Different Types of Leads

We are in the middle of our Opinion Persuasion writing unit in our classroom, and when we get to the lesson on how to write a lead, my students will look at me like I am speaking a foreign language.  I am not kidding!

Have any of you had that same response?

Over time, I have found that although my kiddos are genuinely listening to my instructions and what I think are great lead examples, they just can't keep this in their heads without visuals.  Now when I teach these lead examples, I show these charts on my smart board, and it really helps them make connections to what I am saying.  I also have printed versions posted on our wall for continued reference.  If you can use this, click on either of the images below.

Here is one of the types of leads demonstrated...

I hope this can help you in your writing units, no matter if you are teaching Opinion or Persuasive writing or another writing genre.

Winter Sentences using Sentence Frames.

For many struggling writers and ESL students, writing is such a difficult skill to learn. I find that teaching with sentence frames helps students learn the parts of a sentence and how to write them. Using themes helps students write because they have lots of words in their word bank to use.
I start with the parts of the sentence. I give each student a set of the cards below:
I cut up a sentence into parts and hold up each card. Then students hold up the sentence part card. That way I can assess every student at the same time. (put them in a pocket chart.)
Then I have them practice by unscrambling a sentence and illustrating it.
