Non-Fiction Text Features

We are working on research essays in my 4th grade class right now, and students are using magazine articles, web based articles, library databases, and expository texts to gather their information. Understanding non-fiction text features has been so helpful for the students as they navigate long blocks of text in their quest for facts.

Prior to our research essay projects, I gave the students a list of common text features and reviewed the list with the students. We used PicCollage to complete a non-fiction text feature scavenger hunt. Most students know all of the common text features, but the list is a good reminder for the students, and they keep it in their binders as a reference.
