Improving Reading Fluency

I want my students to read aloud more smoothly, but we just don't have enough time during the school day to practice reading orally. I can make sure each child reads aloud at least one time per day, but chances are, the student is only going to have the opportunity to read a handful of paragraphs at most.

I have a letter I send to parents to help students spend more time reading aloud during non-school hours. The letter gives tips for monitoring the oral reading to encourage better fluency. I don't require practice at home every week, but requiring some oral reading practice away from school has helped with student reading skills overall.

Happy Reading!
